slingin' it

I've been a big fan of "baby wearing" since Peanut was about 6mo old when I realized I could have a happy baby AND my arms back to myself.
My on-line friend made me a comfy Mei Tai (Asian-style carrier) and also a soft wrap (sorta like this). This summer I won a sweet sling from here and realized I really like the versatility that a ring-sling has. I really wanted a silk one but the $$$ price tag was prohibitive. They look simple enough to make so here I am! I ordered this fabric and a set of these. I have my directions from Jan's site.

(ETA: I used the Medium sized Aluminum rings in silver.)

Stay tuned for the outcome! Has anyone else out there attempted sewing their own baby carrier?

Hi! Found your website through Sew, Mama, Sew! I too am a craft addict, a Christian SAHM & consider myself crispy! {I think we might be secretly related!} I have a 3 week old & so want to purchase a sling. I was considering a hotsling, but like the concept of the Moby as well.

All this to say that yes, I attempted to sew my own sling, a fleece pouch style sling, but it ended up a bit too small. Baby feels too tight in there I think.

Good luck with yours though!!

I wore a Maya Wrap for around 4 years (two babies). Several of my friends (having seen my Maya Wrap but not liking the price), made and use their own... they even have made seasonal wraps. I have made one for my son to use with his dolls... just cut about 15" by the WOF, hem, and add velcro on the end that goes through the rings (to help prevent strangulation). Even though I no longer wear my nearly 3 yo, I still have my sling in the van. I use it when my toddler crashes and I need to carry him around somewhere. I also use it when I find myself watching someone else's baby. I don't think I'll ever get rid of my Maya Wrap, not as long as their are babies to be carried!

Did I answer the question? :D

I just found your blog (because of your Boy Doll on Sew Mama Sew) and am enjoying reading it... gonna go add you to my bloglines!
